BUYING ZEBRA FINCHES

WHERE CAN I BUY ZEBRA FINCHES?

In the UK there are several possible sources of Zebra Finches.  The answer to this question depends what you are looking for.  For example, you are unlikely to be able to buy Exhibition quality stock from your local pet store!  The main sources are a local breeder, a specialist bird supplier, the pet shop, or a bird auction. If possible, the best choice is the local breeder, since it is here that you will get the most background information about the birds, the way they are managed and housed, what they are being fed, etc.  If the breeder is a member of the Zebra Finch Society it is likely that the birds will have one of the ZFS official rings on one leg.  These are coloured according to the year, and will be stamped with the breeders alphanumeric code number, as well as a sequential number.  Thus this combination is specific to an individual bird.  Ask the breeder to show you. Some pet stores are also knowledgeable about their stock.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY FOR MY ZEBRAS?

You can pay anything from £1 to £100 for an individual Zebra Finch!  For aviary bred pairs which are intended for an aviary £4-6 per pair is a reasonable price.  Certain colour forms which are relatively new to the UK will probably double that price.  If you eventually intend to exhibit your birds, then you will need to purchase stock which more closely resemble the ZFS Standard.  For such birds you will need to approach a current exhibitor, but you should still get good quality birds for between £15 and £30 per pair.  For even better quality stock from the most successful Champion exhibitors, you may be required to pay £50 per pair or more.

(Note : these prices are for guidance only.  It is up to you to negotiate! )

WHERE CAN I FIND MORE ABOUT ALL THE ABOVE TOPICS?

New members of the Zebra Finch Society receive a “Starter Pack” which gives all the above information, and more, in greater detail. The ZFS also has available, at modest prices, an excellent book on the subject written by Chris Blackwell, and two videos on Zebra Finch management by leading exhibitor Peter Harrison.
